Purpose
The AppSec Village is committed to creating a space to provide education and community to anyone interested in application security at DEF CON. We believe that security is strongest when developed in a forum open for discussion and engagement that accommodates a diversity of views, methodologies, and thought. To realize this, we maintain a culture free of harassment and bullying.
All attendees, volunteers, and organizers of the AppSec Village, are required to follow the AppSec Village Code of Conduct as well as the DEF CON Code of Conduct.
Expected Behavior
The AppSec Village caters to a community rich in diversity. We support people of different national backgrounds, ages, genders, orientations, ethnicities, religions, political views, and levels of experience. When in our spaces, in person or virtually, you are expected to behave in a way that is welcoming, kind, and appropriate for all types of people.
Disagreement is encouraged; harassment, abusive language, exclusionary/demeaning jokes, bullying, or threats of any kind are not tolerated.
The Definitions
Harassment is any behavior that can be perceived as causing offense or humiliation to another person. Harassment can take the form of name-calling, demeaning questions, badgering, persistent disruption, stalking, or other activities intended to cause offense, fear, or demean others. Victims get to define what is demeaning.
Exclusionary jokes are jokes which objectify or demean people or classes of people based on their national background, age, gender, orientation, ethnicity, religion, political views, or levels of experience.
Bullying is coercive behavior meant to harm or intimidate. Bullying can take the form of physical or virtual intimidation, repeated harassment, and unwanted "joking."
Threats can be explicit or implicit. Threats can be to someone's career, physical safety, mental health, or other factors.
Consequences
If any community member asks anyone to cease objectionable behavior, the behavior must end immediately.
Organizers can take any action to address reported violations of the Code of Conduct up to and including disqualification from contests, temporary and permanent banning from any talk, workshop, roundtable, or AppSec Village as a whole. Threats will be met with an immediate ban.
